Myanmar at World Travel Market
World Travel Market is staged annually in London and it is the leading global event for the travel industry.
The Myanmar Tourism Marketing has an exhibitor here to bring together all Myanmar based companies and individuals who actively want to promote Myanmar as a destination.
The exhibitor is always busy with traders wanting to include Myanmar in their tours and individuals with an interest in the country and wanting to plan their trip.
Myanmar number of visitors per year is still very low compared to other Southeast Asian countries, but it’s growing really fast.
Here is a table with the number of foreign visitors received in 2013 (Source: World Tourism Association):
- Thailand – 26.5 million
- Malaysia – 25.7 million
- Hong Kong – 25.6 million
- South Korea – 12.1 million
- Japan – 10.3 million
- Indonesia – 8.8 million
- Vietnam – 7.5 million
- Myanmar – 2 million
Tourism in Myanmar has boomed since the government began political and economic reforms.
The number of visitors reached 1 million for the first time in 2012. Then 2 million visitors in 2013 which is a record-breaking for the country and the number expected for 2014 is 3 million. Also the new online e-visa system from September 1st 2014 will boost visitor numbers even further.
But the industry has struggled to keep up, and hotel rooms remain expensive due to short supply.
By mid 2015 most of the hotels which are now under construction will be finished and hopefully the prices will drop since there will be more to choose from.
Therefore, it is highly recommended to book your hotel in advance, especially if you come in high season (October – April).
